Letter to Parents 20/11/2020

Dear Parents and Carers

As we end week two of the national lockdown, I hope you are all managing to keep safe and well.

We are delighted school is open to welcome students as normal and I thought it would be helpful to update you on how students and staff are maintaining a positive attitude at Heworth  Grange, despite the circumstances.

Year 11 have just completed their assessments, and have worked so hard over the last two weeks, trying their best throughout.  We are going to have a little celebration to recognise their efforts, after the last exam this afternoon.  We will then be working with the students to identify gaps and support them going forward in the next few weeks.

We have also launched our new attendance strategy for all students this week.  Students with 100% attendance will go into the `Crunchie Friday’ lottery each week to win a chocolate bar, and all students will also be participating in the Christmas attendance drive to win a reward experience, in the last week of term.

In addition, the student leadership and advisory representatives have also been elected and met for the first time this week, to discuss initiatives for this academic year.  Our new anti-bullying strategy also started this week beginning with odd socks day to celebrate diversity on Monday, and we will continue to focus on this as the term continues.

As always, it is inspiring to see the fabulous engagement in lessons, when the team walk around school.  In addition to lessons in school, staff who are self-isolating have been able to remote into school to deliver lessons to classes with a member of the school team supporting in the classroom. It has been a great way for staff and students to connect, despite the limitations of self-isolation.

We continue to work and improve our remote learning strategy, and it has been encouraging to note that 75% of students isolating, have been logging onto work remotely through Class Charts.  We have been contacting parents and carers in the last few weeks to find out if students have access to the internet, and a device at home.  If you have been contacted and your child does not have access to a device, or the internet, please contact school so that we can look into ways to support you.

From next week we should be in a position to loan laptops to students self-isolating to support home working.

We are also part of the National Breakfast Programme, which is open to all schools, and it was great to see our Year 7 team delivering breakfasts for students to take home today.  We will continue the distribution with the other year groups on Monday.

Once again, thank you for your support, patience and kindness, as we navigate through the frequent changes from government, at the same time, working to improve all areas of the school.

Best wishes

Ms A Denholm
