Anwar takes headline prize at Cricket awards
Year 11 student Anwar D scooped two prestigious awards at the Felling Cricket Club 2023 presentation evening. Anwar arrived in the UK from Afghanistan and showed some interest and ability in Cricket in PE. He was encouraged to attend a training session at Felling CC and, after some initial reluctance, he thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
Anwar was named Junior Player of the Year after a very successful season in the U15 team. With the bat in 24 innings, he scored 172 runs, averaging 12.29, with a best score of 32. Anwar’s strength is with the ball in hand, and it was his bowling performances that really caught the eye. Over the course of the season, he took 25 wickets at an average of 29.72, and recorded his best figures of 5/23.
Anwar’s second award was The Michael McCarthy Memorial Shield, the most prestigious of all the club awards. It is presented to the Junior player of the season on an annual basis by Michael’s father, Shaun. Michael represented Felling for several years, captaining the junior sides at all age groups. Tragically, while serving with the Royal Navy in 2003, Michael suffered fatal injuries in a tragic accident.
Anwar’s junior performances combined with his efforts for the men’s second XI have helped him to receive this award, but he has also made new friends and teammates who have nothing but praise for him.
Anwar follows in the footsteps of several former Heworth Grange students who have won this award: Chris G (2007, 2008); Alex B (2009); Nicky H(2010); Sean R (2012); Ryan L (2014) and Callum W (2020).
We look forward to seeing how Anwar’s Cricket career develops in 2024 and beyond.
