Heworth Grange School Welcomes the Royal Institution for Explosive “Energy Live” Science Shows

Heworth Grange School, part of Consilium Academies, recently welcomed a presenter from the Royal Institution to deliver a series of dynamic and interactive “Energy Live” science shows to Year 7 and Year 9 pupils. As a school committed to fostering strong scientific understanding and curiosity, the event was designed to give students meaningful, hands-on experiences that extend learning beyond the classroom and highlight the importance of science in everyday life.

The high-energy sessions were packed with experiments, explosions, and hands-on participation. Students explored a range of energy stores and transfers through exciting practical demonstrations from racing to pop balloons using elastic energy, to investigating the chemical store in burning fuels, and even discovering the nuclear store of energy found in everyday bananas.

The school also hosted a community science show, featuring interactive investigations and dramatic demonstrations linked to the energy used in rockets, providing an engaging experience for both families and local residents.

Pupils were fully immersed in the sessions, leaving with a deeper understanding of energy stores as well as a memorable experience that brought science to life in an exciting and accessible way.

Mrs Ladha, Head of Science at Heworth Grange School, said:
“Bringing science to life outside the classroom is incredibly important. Experiences like this allow our students to see real-world science in action and spark curiosity beyond the curriculum. The Royal Institution shows captured their interest brilliantly and helped build a genuine excitement for learning.”
