Literacy and Numeracy

LITERACY

At Heworth Grange the students in Key Stage Three work with a reading programme called ‘Accelerated Reader’.

On entry to Heworth Grange in Year 7, all students will sit a variety of assessments, including a STAR test on Accelerated Reader. The result will allow us to see the chronological reading age of the student and where there may be gaps in reading ability. Alongside a written reading test, the result will allow the SEND team to highlight required support.

Heworth Grange has a tiered reading scheme in place with all students’ needs identified:

  • Independent Reading
  • Small Group Reading
  • 1:1 Reading
  • Lexia Intervention
  • Phonics Support

The star test is completed every term and the stages adjusted accordingly.

If students require additional support, they will be placed in an advisory intervention group to work on Lexia.

Students will be issued with a username and password so they continue to access the literacy support at home.

TOP TIPS FOR SUPPORTING READING AT HOME

  • Aim to read for at least 10 minutes every day. Aim to read at the same time each day.
  • Allow your child to choose their own book.
  • Read the book together.
  • If a mistake is made give your child a few seconds to have a go, if unsure, say the word for them...keep the story flowing.
  • Do not rush your child through a book, let them take their time and read at their pace.
  • If the text is too difficult, read the words together. Practice saying the words and discuss
  • Keep switching the way they read:- read the text together, the child reads the text on their own and read the text together etc.
  • If your child loses track of where they are, use a ruler to keep focus in a straight line.
  • At a suitable point, talk about what has happened in the story.

NUMERACY

At Heworth Grange, all students have access to the Symphony Maths programme. This numeracy based online intervention is to highlight areas that may prove difficult and allow the student the opportunity to practice the misconception.

All students in Year 7 complete a preliminary assessment that identifies students who may require additional support.
